Nanith Radio

The Evolution of Radio

Follow the evolution of radio through AM, FM, stereo, satellite, DAB, internet streaming and connected listening technologies.

A medium that repeatedly changed its technology

Radio has survived successive technological shifts because the listening experience is more important than any single transmission system. AM made mass broadcasting practical, FM improved audio quality and resistance to interference, stereo expanded music presentation, and portable electronics moved radio away from the living-room set.

Digital distribution

Satellite and digital terrestrial systems created new channel capacity and different coverage models. Internet streaming made the most dramatic geographic change: a station no longer needed its transmitter to reach every listener. A local broadcaster could be heard internationally wherever a usable connection existed.

Radio in connected devices

Phones, smart speakers, cars and web browsers now act as receivers. Discovery has therefore become a major part of the experience. Directories and apps organise stations by name, country and genre while the broadcaster continues to produce the programme. Nanith Radio is built around this modern discovery layer.
